The grade records are kept in ten categories (category names are set by the teacher) and four sub-categories for each category (homework, tests, projects, miscellaneous.) Despite its name, LCE can be used even if you are not interested in a local area network (LAN.) Many parameters can be entered such as: cost for one teacher workstation, cost for one student workstation, cost for one multi-media workstation, # of teacher computers per classroom, number of student computers per classroom, network type (Token Ring, 10-BaseT, etc.), and so on. Once the parameters have been entered (or you can use the defaults), the program will calculate how many computers of each type are needed, how many servers / access units / etc. for networking are needed, and so forth. The total costs are determined for network cabling,total with cabling and computers, total with no cabling. This is a very quickand easy way to get a ballpark dollar cost of technology. In this program, students must make decisions on investing in a simulated stock market, but only after they have taken care of the normal bills encountered in everyday life. Students must pay their grocery bill, utilities, rent, etc. Each student starts with a random salary from which federal and state taxes are deducted as well as social security. Since the goal is not to see who gets the richest, the fact that each student has a different salary is of no importance. However, everyone gets the same stock performance so their investing skills are easily compared. Since they can only visit the broker once each session, students must plan ahead. Up to 38 students can fit into the program registry at any one time. The program tracks all dollar values (bank balance, stock value, shares, etc) for each student. They may view stock history in both table and chart formats, their total worth in chart form, and so on.
